Island, Landmannalaugar – Skogar

Soon time for this year’s summer vacation and this year it’s a couples trip to Iceland, me, Emilie, Victor and Angelica. We will be gone for 16 days, 6 of those days are hiking from Landmannalaugar to Skogar, see detailed planning below.
The rest of the time we are going to drive around Iceland and look at all this country has to offer.

The reason this year’s trip went to Iceland is a very conscious choice because we needed a trip that meet the needs we had because of the trip to Aconcagua.

New team member

Our forum thread on Utsidan finally gave result and we can welcome Mattias to team Lajt! Mattias is flying from Stockholm and is meeting us at Mendoza airport.

Mattis describes himself like this:

I am a happy and positive guy from the area of Östergötland and am 29 years old. After five years of study to become an agronomist at the Swedish University of Agriculture and six month as an exchange student in Scotland, I have ended up in Örebro. I now work as an engineer in biological treatment.

I bought a house outside Örebro that I slowly am renovating. After the job, I also spend time at the gym, the pool or running track. When the time is free I like to travel to new and interesting places. Cold or warm place is less important. And while life is for living, the more adventurous the better it is!

In the summer of 2012, Tobias and Victor will travels together with theirs girlfriends to Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest natural point, and one of the Seven Summits. Kilimanjaro is located in northern Tanzania and is an extinct volcano at 5892 meters above sea level. It is also the world’s highest freestanding mountain, which is a mountain that is not part of any mountain range.

We will this time go on an organized package tour were there besides mountaineering will be safari and relax on Zanzibar. This is the first time for all of us in Africa and for the girls first time at high altitude, very exciting. It will come more information when we are approaching departure.

On top of Kilimanjaro is a glacier that is melting. It is not necessarily due to the global warming as its often claimed. Several scientific studies show that the glacier has decreased since the 1880s because of drier weather. This has led to less rainfall on the mountain top. The mountain can be climbed with no experience of mountaineering, but it is not completely safe. The low air pressure as the high altitude means can cause serious altitude sickness. Large boulders also killed tourists on several occasions when the blocks tumbled down due to glacier melting.

Massif bears dense vegetation up to 4500 meters above sea level. In the lower reaches, where rainfall is low, the vegetation consists mostly of thorn-bearing plants or clean steppe vegetation. Between 1300 m and 3000 m the vegetation is purely tropical. Above 3000 meters altitude is grassland which, in turn, at 4500 meters, will be succeeded by bare rock beds and lava fields with stretches of loose sand.
